Teo Chee Hean and his nonsense

“By the opposition’s own admission, if you ask them, are you ready to form a government… they say, no, no, we’re not ready.” – DPM Teo Chee Hean, Straits Times, 8 April 2011.

I think Mr Teo should not shoot his mouth off too fast without his brain having process some vital information first. While he ridicules the opposition’s admission that they are not yet ready to form the government (actually it’s only the WP who’s said so, contrary to what Mr Teo said – “opposition” as a whole), Mr Teo should remember that it is his own PAP which has been telling Singaporeans this past few weeks that its new candidates are also not ready – not even ready to be MPs.

That is why they have to be “understudies”. Like Tin Pei Ling and even army general BG Tan Chuan Jin.

So, Mr Teo, don’t be too quick. Your own new candidates aren’t even ready to be MPs, for goodness sake.

And that too, by your own admission.

Mr Teo then went on:

“So what they’re actually asking you to do is to pay a very high premium for a so-called insurance, which.. they can’t deliver.”

Again, Mr Teo, hold your horses ot you’ll get cake all over your own face.

Rewind to just the past week or so.

What Singaporeans will actually be paying a high premium for are “understudies” who aren’t ready to be MPs and to pay S$15,000 a month for each of these 20-plus “understudies”.

Do the maths.

$15,000 a month per “understudy”, is equal to S$900,000 for each of them for a five-year term.

Multiply that by say 24 new PAP “understudies” and you and I will be paying a premium of : S$21,600,000 !!!

This must be the most expensive premium for “understudy MPs” anywhere on this planet.

Considering that these “understudy” MPs will also only be part-time MPs and you see the premium you will be paying for them.

Part-time MPs who are also “understudies” who make almost a million dollars.

Does it get more ridiculous than this?

And this is suppose to be Singapore’s “real insurance”, according to Mr Teo’s words?

Really?

Tin Pei Ling is S’pore’s “real insurance”? She who needs to be mollycoddled by the Senior Minister to waltz into Parliament?

BG Tan, again another one who needs to be pampered and carried into Parliament by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong?

Janil Puthucheary, he who equates “saving kids lives” to doing NS, is S’pore’s “real insurance”?

Desmond Choo, Desmond Lee, Ong Teng Koon – all sons of former MPs or ministers – are Singapore’s “real insurance”? All of whom are going to slip under the radar and hide under the skirts of ministers and ferried into parliament?

I think we Singaporeans should be aware of the nonsense which the PAP is putting out there nowadays. They are being termed as “hard truths” so as to hide the stupidity of what they say.

Let me ask you a simple question:

Do you think Singapore’s future is more secure in the hands of someone like Low Thia Khiang, or Sylvia Lim, or Chen Show Mao, or Hazel Poa, or Vincent Wijeysingha, or Tony Tan than someone like Tin Pei Ling, or Janil Puthucheary, or any of those “sons-of”???

I mean, seriously.

Mr Teo, you FAIL.

Try harder next time.

But to be totally serious, Singapore’s political system needs an upgrade. We seriously need to vote in more opposition members. This is something which we have been yearning for and this time round, we have good choices.

So please give your support to these opposition parties and their candidates.

I am saying this because I remember what the PAP did these last five years. They are too many to list but if we give them full support again, it only tells them that what they have done is alright and that we want more of it.

The PAP’s latest batch of candidates are the worst lot I have seen in a long time. Clearly, there is a serious problem the PAP is facing in recruiting people of real calibre. To give your support to them is not just helping the PAP live a lie.

It is also the surest way to do Singapore in.

Vote opposition.

That, despite what Mr Teo is trying to tell you in his selfish and self-serving way, is indeed and truly the only insurance we Singaporeans have for our country.

By the way, please add your name to this call for the PAP to field Tin Pei Ling in an SMC. More than 4,000 people have done so in the last 3 days. But will the PAP listen? Of course not. So, why would you give your vote to them?

    Good stuff.

They seem to have forgotten who they are answerable and accountable to. Us, the Citizens of Singapore. They have gotten too repeat these statements so many times that they believe it to be true – that only the PAP can deliver etc. It’s a fail in 2011.

Perhaps Teo didn’t put across his words more properly or more humbly.
But if u look at d bigger picture of being a government, and having to be responsible for everything under d sun, including ensuring good potential people to succeed d older ministers, it is no easy task. We can’t afford to make much mistakes in governing this small country, mind you. It’s so easy to destroy than to build a country, if you look at history. It takes years to achieve, n many countries haven’t been able to build a decent platform to start building up the country. Don’t take our achievements for
    granted.
By d way what really bad deeds did PAP did to u and your family that deserve our vicious attacks. Don’t we have decent housing, jobs education etc. So I don’t understand what’s all d dissatisfactions are all about.
D only thing that sometimes deserve our criticism is of them having d tendency to be arrogant n an air of over-confidence. But that’s human nature. A ‘government’ is made up people, like you n me, who have imperfections, make mistakes, etc. So, therefore, there shall continue to be criticisms/oppositions no matter
what. So I think we should judge them based
    on overall performance, that’s all.
However I do agree we should have Oppositions in parliament to act as a checker, n to humble them a bit.

So what if they are understudies, and lack political experiences.

There are people/household who are earning less than $2000 per month, paying S & C to Town councils; who in turn pays these MPs $15k per month , and you can say ” So what if they are understudies, and lack political experiences” ??

What is the world coming to about. Granted, for middle income earners $15k is no big deal, but please spare a thought for the lower income earners.

        April 24, 2011 at 10:06

Is it a fact that MP get their pay from town council’s collection of S&C charges?

      • Kk
        April 24, 2011 at 10:06

U seems to imply that if d MP’s is reduced substantially then we would not need to pay ‘so much’ in S&C charges? This is narrow minded of u. We are talking about running a government, not a small company where the manager’s salary has eaten into it’s P&L.
Anyway $15k is quite a normal pay for a managerial job, isn’t it? What’s d big deal in today’s standard?
I do feel sorry for d ‘less than $2k’ family , but we are like staying in a 5 star hotel in this ‘Hotel Singapore’ so every guest has to pay to stay. We have no natural resources like oil to pay
        for these conveniences.
Finally, perhaps u didn’t understand this ‘understudy’ thing clear enough in politics that’s why u are behaving like that… finding fault wherever u can, n attacking it mindlessly. Do look at d bigger picture, sometimes. U think it’s easy to get good potential people to run a country? Succession has very often create political instability in history. U think our stability n prosperity is firmly unshakeable? You know what’s like of d May 13th 1969 in Malaysia? And here u are criticizing about understudy n minister/MP’s pay.
There are no perfect government in d world. There will always be areas that’s seems bad about governments.

        April 24, 2011 at 10:06

By d way in Malaysia d MP’s pay is low.. But their personal wealth are in millions after becoming MP or minister. U want this for Singapore?
And it’s present PM Najib, once said that d Malay Kris ( sword) will be bathed with chinese blood, when he was a youth leader, during a rally. Oh, today he’s worth billions u know! How’s this for a government?!

Sorry d last part was a misplaced sentence.
Were supposed to be inserted after “succeed d older ministers”
Also would like to add to this…That, we need to learn a job/task before we can really do it well. D same should be for politics! So what’s wrong with being placed as a understudy. You mean if d oppositions are in government they naturally know d art of governance?

      April 18, 2011 at 10:06

Come on, PAP should have many places for “understudy” like Ms Tin. She did not even serve at grassroots for at least 1 term??!! Likewise, Singaporeans are not stupid, and will not vote for Oppositions who only appear at election time! Look at Chiam and Low, they did at least 2 term of grassroot before they were voted in!!

I used to be a supporter of PAP whose 1st generations our parents (and some of us) admire and are thankful for. But look at the 3rd and coming generations of candidates! They are swerving away from the “hardwork and heart-ware of earning & fighting for their place as leaders”.
I hope the people of Singapore is willing to stand-up so that PAP can change and be alerted that they are actually swaying away because of too much victory and many good years. Singapore is NOT PAP, PAP who forms the government also need the people to follow. The saying goes, Good leaders are successful when they have Good followers. Look at Egypt, Thailand, etc. If the leaders are good but followers are not cooperative, where are they today?

I m not a supporter of any party. Just a guy who wants to play fair. that all.

We are not in the 60s or 70s when the country was developing, and people are poorer, and segmented. This is 2011, we are ‘first world country’. I think politician have to work the ground like a dog, begging for support for a cause that was a matter of basic survival for the country. Save the dignity, it is so dated to have to do this. Get on with the job to manage the country and bring it to the next level. This is more practice, rather than be a hypocrite and shaking so many hands, and smiling superficially. Pretending to do this and that for the people just to get popular support. What’s important for a politician is to have good moral standing, smart, and having the foresight to lead.
By the way, what’s so nice to become a leader of a batch of people who are spoiled and constantly unsatisfied & are complain kings. 🙂
Yes, by all means vote in some oppositions and mellow down their ego a bit. All human being needs that sometimes.

Please, please, compare Apple-to-apple, firstly Malaysia is not a first world country neither near it, and they are a much larger-size country, etc. etc. You should compare Singapore with Hong Kong who also DO NOT HAVE resources!! The ruling govt always has this mentality (and i sense it from you too)and say… do u want corrupt govt, nepotism, etc. If you compare all the developed nations, Japan, US, Sweden, etc. their MP/Minister pay, and the amount of work they do, S’pore’s minister pay does not make obvious sense. We are not saying pay them like they do, just not overly too much. The ministers pay here are pegged at TOP earners of their equivalent counter-part in the same industry or training, but do they really measure up?? That is the question.
Do Wong Kan Seng (who is a DPM) measure up to his task? Are there a thorough review of the pre-emptive measures taken to prevent recurrence of the Mas Selamat escape? The measures taken last year was not convincing, neither were the circumstances of the escape (immigration also did not filter him out using another’s passport). It was obvious loop holes in the policies and system that has allowed it to happen. And we are paying top dollars (in the world) for such policy makers!! Where is the math??

Please, Please, Hong Kong is not exactly like Spore. We are multi racial and our country is surrounded by countries that can become very hostile any time. What apple to apple..red and green? Oh they are complaining about skyhigh home prices. Many of their homes are very small. Some poor ones still live in caged cubicles. Its a no money no talk place! What’s good about HK? HK also has good support-e.g.
when George Soros targeted the HK dollars in 1997 it had China to support it.
China told Soros to back off because it was ready to dump $150b to do battle with him. Do we have that kind of ‘motherland’ support? And HK had been the gateway to China , and that greatly benefitted HK. So I would think that they had it much easier than us.
So, you do think that Spore is a ‘first world’ country?! So how did we attain this status, by yours and my efforts? Or could it had been God given?. Certainly not!
I think we all would agree that any government- be it PAP or WP – would be try to attain this status, however difficult it is right?. So shouldn’t we be a little fairer to the current government, which happened to be a PAP one , instead of just attacking it, given any opportunity. By the way, first world status is not permanent. Any country can degress to 3rd world if not managed carefully , over time.
I think our country is first world but its people isn’t yet, sad to say.
Talking about Wong Kan Seng..To be fair, we haven’t had a single terrorist attack so far right? Only Mas Selamat escaped(was it a strategy by the Security to lure the ‘Snails out of
their holes!?) And, crimes are generally very low. All these happened under his leadership. I feel save here! do you? Why are we just focusing on the Mas Selamat episode. And u make it out like he is not worth a single cent. I don’t like Wong Kan Seng too! He’s a bit of a snob! But we all got to be fair when making judgement right?.
Ministers are like a CEO of a large organization, in fact much bigger. And who sets the rules that they can’t be pay this much?…the West? And a typical CEO deserved to be paid this much but not a minister? Where is the logic here? By all means pay OBAMA more too. I really don’t understand why you people cannot get over this issue.

PS.. Going back, I do admire your concern for the poor, this is a sort righteousness on your part. What do you sugggest the government should do to about ‘this below $2K’ families, besides the $15K pay thing?

Green apple and red apples are still apples, nearest comparison can be quite true. Obviously impossible to find another country exactly in geographical, race, population, history like each other. But Hong kong has many similarities with S’pore; chinese are majority, we r both overseas chinese (until china takes over in 1997), both lack natural resources. So dun just day Singapore govt is one up! Hongkong govt is actually much more democratic (again until 1997), know your history. I have an uncle with family there, but some of my relatives chose to stay here- both places has its good and bad, but i feel the political environment is one notch up S’pore (plus many more areas like cost vs salary, happiness index, etc).
Yes, agree country status can change (in a short time; 1-2 generations), thats why it is worrying and we have to speak up if the ruling govt is straying. Point is : why do you think one can cook a frog in a slow boiling pot!?! If the ruling party is not sensitive to those wrong values (snob, taking people for granted, etc) they are breeding dangerous disease within, should one speak up?? If being a PAP supporter cannot make an effect then one should tell the hard truth by becoming the opposition. Those earning below $2k shold be empowered to better jobs as much as possible while maintaining a low living cost (which is the burning issue now). Another way is the govt should control the FW/FT influx as this affect those below middle/lower income greatly.

Red apple is sweeter with no sour taste. Green apple is sour by nature. SAME?!

U obviously don’t understand racial matters.
You mean to tell us that because spore is majority Chinese then we wouldn’t have any race issue now n in future? Ignore the Malays, Indian etc? This thing is one of d most important matter to manage, n need manage well, n constantly. Does HK have this to manage?

I didn’t mention democracy in these discussion!?! What are u talking about?
Anyway, do we really know how to use it.. when an ignorant fellow will also cast one vote as u, d
more ‘well informed one’. Is this really a 100% system? It can also stifle d workings of governing too.. look at US, thailand, etc. It can also be easily abused… like Malaysia which voted in d ultra Malays that mistreated it’s other minority races…,n Taiwan, Japan etc. We are lucky to have quite a decent group in charge, n u people keep saying that.. ‘oh ya, these are a bunch of crooks who are out to destroy me, my family n d country. You guys seems so sure, and have solid proof of all their evil ways?!
Democracy is less than 200 years old n, invented by d British. It’s not a universal system. Of course it has more pros than cons.

Inflation is happening everywhere in the world. Don’t just blame it all on d government. This is being ignorant n unfair. On a relative basis, spore has quite low inflation compare to d world.
N u say it like we have one of d highest, of course is all due to those crooks’ doings!

If we, as sporean, is going to continue to behave like this who doesn’t weigh the good n d bad clearly, and be such a misguided ‘smart Alex’ who think we know d inner working/happenings of d government and of spore generally, I am not hopeful we will have a great spore country in future. :(:(

Apples are apples, grapes are grapes and they all come in all shape sizes and taste. These are just anology, closer to say, apples and durians.
I did not mention “we wouldn’t have any race issue now n in future?” this is a seperate topic altogether. HK may not have these to manage but they have to manage the different major changes as well – ie. “new boss” – China. After functioning as a democracy for 100 years, they are now under communist rule although its a more open one, they still have to manage it well!
We have to speak from both knowledge/facts and experiences (eg. my relatives living in HK) to have a true, balanced view of things. How many countries have you lived in before? How many places have you travelled to?
Your commnet – “It can also be easily abused… like Malaysia which voted in d ultra Malays that mistreated it’s other minority races…,n Taiwan, Japan etc.”
The trouble with Singaporeans are also that they are not even taking calculated risks! Hence, i would not think voting in an oppoistion will make us like Malaysia, Thailand, etc. Look at Ling How Dong -of SDP and a few other 1 term Opposition. They get voted out in the next election!! Singapreans are NOT stupid – we are very kiasu, kiasi and Kiamsiap… we know we will protect our rice bowl first, to an extend is good. But overy KS, will harm us in the longterm.

Your cooment – “n u people keep saying that.. ‘oh ya, these are a bunch of crooks who are out to destroy me, my family n d country. You guys seems so sure, and have solid proof of all their evil ways?!”
When did we mention this? Our only concern is they have slowly and surely has been seen to rise themselves above the law! They set the law, change constitution without thorough debate, pass motions they (top few) think it is right… these are dangerious and unheathy signs!!
As mentioned, I do not want me and my future generations to live like the proverbial frog – slowly get boiled in a boiling pot! We have to learn from other countries, success of other nations, the dangers/fallacy of some, etc. Dont just live here and think that the ruling government is doing a great job, esp,.if you have a stable job – but do you know more than 350,000 others are still on contracts and in odd jobs!? The numbers are increasing. these are unreported!

True that inflation is icreasing everywhere. This is due to food shortage, petrol (oil) and also trades. Question is how much is the govt willing to alleviate inflation with the policies? Your commnet – “”On a relative basis, spore has quite low inflation compare to d world.” Do you have facts to support??
For example, HK has almost same Corporate tax than S’pore, same or lower personal income tax, BUT no GST! GST contributes to nearly 20% of all Singapore revenue taxes. THis is no small sum, every thing you buy has some sort of taxes (affected by GST)!! Surely they can do something abt this. Notice our FM – Tharman happily said we could hold GST for 5 years?!!, But actually they are able to reduce 1-2% during this high inflation period to ward off the effect, but do they? Nothing done, and i dun blame Singaporeans who say, what goes up never comes down!
The reason why we should speak up with knowledge is exactly – we are a small country – and cannot afford to have errors. Even if the ruling party have proven to have been good – but does that gurantee us it will be??

Talk about lack of democratic political freedom..isnt all these criticisms, cursings, insinuatings of ministers etc,in the internet, a form of freedom of expressions? They can just disrupt all these websites or close it. They DO have the means to do that.
Come on, just speak with a sense of fairness man.. look at Chiam, Low. But of course not this snobbish and “out to get even” guy…Chee.. who questioned where were the $6b that spore had/wanted to lend/give Indonesia in d year 1998 when Suharto were falling, and also prior to his final downfall, when Indon chinese were slaughtered and many women were raped and have stick/pole shoved up their private parts and hung up on a lamp/fence to the public? Why he didn’t mentioned this together with the $6b question? And where were we?… we pretended not to see this. But Taiwan confronted it, and rioted at d Indonesia’s embassy/consulate office and threaten to burn/whatever it staffs and office. That finally stopped the slaughterings. Shame on us all chinese. And this guy Chee only wanted to know the $6b money. You would, by now, guessed that this money maybe a kind of deal to help to influence the political situation there right? Does he really knows what being a government is and, entail to do sometimes?
And you said we should compare with HK? Majority chinese!

Hey, come on, writing in forum like this is not a big thing – MICA knows this – you can only reach out to hundred at most not thousands. This is not democracy in action, just some views for those who care to log in here and there to see. You cannot change the country just by writing here… They also know they cannot shut it down if it is hosted in overseas servers/websites!!
So definitely, we need more of the Chiams, Lows and even Sylvias to represent us!!
I’m sure singaporeans will not vote in Chee (even now) as many were against his style as well, but im also sure he is not a “know all” politician, hence his nonsense rhetorics – not many stand up for him then. Whatever the $6bln is used for, the government is accountable for it; right or wrong, one day it may surface.

Anyway why should a government listen to the people’s thinking/feelings so much? Listen to the university professor of econ, politics, social scientist, etc’s advise better right? We don’t really know about running a country, frankly speaking. We are just common people who knows superficially about most things, unless u are a specialist in your field/interest.
For the below $2K earnings family, doesn’t government have many schemes to help them…. like workfare, skill upgrade trainings, job placement help from CC?, Growth&Share Package, utility rebates, etc? Of course u might say that they increase prices everywhere & increase GST, and give us all these chicken feets which bearly cover these increases. U can do the exact maths on this to confirm? Just being curious lah. Better be sure before making accusations.
Oh, the poor Singaporeans have better living conditions and welfare than HK’s poor right? At less our poor don’t have to live in those caged cubicles, and can go polyclinic for cheap treatment and apply for welfare to obtain free medical services if they really can’t pay right? Is there such things? Can confirm this? If government do indeed have all these, then they are not bad right?
I also think that, given our small country, the multi racial population, our regional location with the surrounding seas of indigenous people countries, the competitive world today, no natural resources… ar..like Israel, its not easy to be a government?!? I think the oppositions cannot handle & manage this country with the people they have now, if they govern. E.g..this fellow Tan Show Mao who, never really stayed in Singapore before, taiwanese by birth, corporate lawyer, have a bit of sly smile and expression. I have no faith in this guy. He probably would just run away if Singapore not stable/in big crisis, to the US or Taiwan. Why they get this type of fellow and says that he is their trumph card just because he is a successful corporate lawyer? I don’t see that he has any reasons to, suddenly come and want to change the political landscape. Undercover PAP? And nobody has ever heard of him before. He said he knows Singapore well enough through his constant contacts with his friends here and through the internet. This guy probably have a big house in US, Taiwan and maybe China? And he can feel for the common people. This is enough to qualify him to be a people’s representative? This is a joke right? Maybe he has a bigger private motive?!?
Maybe 30/50 years after PAP Singapore is finished and goes back to be part of Malaysia like before, because some other party massed up the government/structures/moral standards, that were built up over long periods through mistakes and then fine tuned to achieve today’s Singapore high standard. You guys think its possible? Then I better reserve a place in Australia or somewhere more perdictable politically. Singapore so fragile, I cannot even fall back to farming..like other big country… to continue to survive for the rest of my life without this present day conditions. So I think Singapore must be strong and stable politically forever to survive as a country, for me and my future children to live in. How to achieve this? Very important right?
Pls. do reply to all the above mentioned, pointedly. I am politically uneducated, just use my common sense to make some judgement only. Do educate me.
    Thanks.
Interesting debates you guys were having! Continue!

@humble cck -> Your cooment “You said that government is not listening to its people at all anymore, then why have they tightened/limit the influx of foreigners after some complains from Singaporeans last year? Doesn’t seems to tally with what anti-government people often complain about?!”
The influx of FT/FW has been serious since about 5-6 years ago (2006), and the ground and labour movement has been feeding back to the govt, but as usual, the “Top ministers” in consultation with Professors/Economist says the Policy should still stays. On economic sense and certain controlled influx of these is helpful, but the numbers are getting out of hand. It was only in 2010 that Labour chiefs send a strong signal to the Cabinet that the numbers are getting out of control. Studies made, recoomendations reported then they work!! They dun listen to the ground, per se!!
-> “We don’t really know about running a country, frankly speaking. We are just common people who knows superficially about most things, unless u are a specialist in your field/interest.””
      >You do not need to be a specialist, just read widely and know where to find some figures. If you do not have the basic knowledge of facts and figures it is hard to comment and it does not make sense to reply your concerns here. Thank-you!

THIS IS A SAD, SAD, SAD DAY FOR SINGPAORE !!
From today, Singapore may not be the same again.
I’m refering to WP (and some extend SPP) incumbents LowTK and Chiam ST leaving their SMC
to fight for a GRC each!
This is historic. But this is the way to go…so the 2 incumbents decide… AND IT WILL TEST THE MEETLE or APATHY of Singaporeans! IF Singaporeans is gunho, they will vote in 1 or 2 GRCs, if apathy, there will be NO Opposition.
By these 2 moves, it may mean there will NOT BE ANY Nominated OPPOSITION in 2011-2016
Parliament. IS this what singaporeans want? Is this what Singaporeans want for our Children? Our future generations? DO we have a steely meetle to dare voite in a CREDIBLE Opposition into a GRC??

I cannot wait for 7May to arrive!! God Bless Singapore!

just because you do not agree with the political opinions of others, does not mean that there are any lesser, uglier, or should they be passed off as mere complains. statistics and results are fine and dandy but they do not reflect all sentiments and issues that some singaporeans are facing on the ground, everyone has different life experiences. Yes, we have results compared to the rest of south east asian countries…but at what cost? Given the small demographics of Singapore, who’s to say that somebody else can’t do the job better?

The growing support for opposition is is the evolving of thoughts and opinions, no matter how wrong or right you can deem them to be. I myself do not consider myself an opposition supporter and i do not agree with many stuff that have been going around on the internet. However, I do recognise that all of this is evolving of thoughts in singapore and is a mark of any educated first world nation, and hopefully to a higher level of politics. The PAP have to realised that as time goes, dissent will only increase they more they tighten control. Either that or do away with education altogether.

Politics are politics. From the day candidates decide to run, they have to be prepared to be subjected to scrutiny and harsh comments. No matter how some candidates deem themselves to be able and intelligent, they should’ve the sense of mind to at least clear up their public image, and keep the skeletons in the closet. TPL has failed to do that, and paid the price. What the new candidates have been subjected to is not as harsh compared to what past opposition leaders have been subjected to by the incumbent government, and learned the hard way. It is not that singaporeans are being too harsh, it is the candidates who had failed to play the political game right.

If we have go and vote for an MP to represent us then that particular MP can hold his/her head high irregardless of his or her percentage of winning. If he/she ride on some other people strength to be an MP. Then, I don’t think people will respect them. So anyone want to be a respected MP must has their own ability and merits.
