Get a grip, WP supporters! You’re becoming an embarassment

PAP members and supporters address each other as comrades. Just go take a look at the Young PAP Facebook page. It’s a visit which will bring you back in time – to a period where communists were called “reds”, and when a little book of that colour was all the rage in China. Failure to adhere to its teachings would buy you a little visit from the devotees of one fella named Mao. And these Mao adherents weren’t gonna pray over you with gentleness. They would lay hands on you, no doubt, but not the way you might imagine.

But it is 21st Century now and we’re in Singapore. Even so, it seems wanton mindless adoration is not reserved just for Mao or – some say – his wannabes, the pure white demi-gods of the PAP. The newly-ordained Members of Parliament of the Workers’ Party too seem to attract the same devotion reserved more for followers of religious faiths.

Chen Show Mao, the very well-credentialled worldly-wise gentlemen from the WP seems able to do no wrong. Even the simplest of things that he does makes his supporters’ go weak in the knees, (some have been said to foam at the mouth too) and bend at his every word like lallang in the wind or at every sighting of the man, even if it’s just a picture on Facebook. (Some don’t even need to see his face – just a sighting of his hair alone makes one dizzy, it is said.)

Well, today – Saturday – the PM and the ministers were sworn in at the Istana. And so all MPs were in attendance, including our friends in light blue.

A picture of the WP MPs at the Istana was posted online and… goodness gracious… WP supporters seem to have left their senses and embraced Lady Gaga (and I don’t mean the singer). The reaction from WP supporters make the hairs behind your neck stand in bewilderment and you almost want to tie yourself to the stake and light the match yourself in a merciful act of self-immolation to get away from the mass hysteria of WP-worship.

Have a look here:

And the WP MPs haven’t even utter a single word in Parliament yet! Already, the hero-worship is in overdrive – and embarassing – mode. Here’s more:

From the comments, you’d think some super-intelligent, super-powerful alien life forms have descended upon us lowly homosapiens to save and deliver our pathetic souls from the evil hands of some oppressive megalomaniac murderous rulers. (Well, some actually do think this is so.)

And we express our gratitude for their selflessness with shameless (and shameful) unrestrained euphoria like the kind last felt at Hougang stadium on 8 May which, incidentally, was warranted especially when WP’s Aljunied win is an historic one. But I’d thought that the soaring emotions of that night had died down somewhat. Hmm..

I think lets pause and take a step back. Any kind of blind loyalty and extreme worship is bad. Whether it’s the PAP or the WP or any other opposition party on the altar of hope. But even as I cringe at the wanton and blatant expression of unbridled love (both from the PAP supporters as well as the WP ones), I find it amusing as well. How easily we bow down to the human gods we fashion after our imagination, and lay all our hopes on them, not realising that these human gods are well, human and are imperfect.

I am sure the WP MPs are a little – at least – embarassed at the unrestrained outpouring of LOVE.

Yet, on the one hand there’s this extreme hatred for the PAP (from some WP supporters) and this compulsive love for the WP. It is quite scary.

For me, I think it’s best to wait and treat the WP MPs as we would any other party’s MPs – servants, not masters, or rock stars, or demi-gods, who are there because of our votes and who are there to serve us.

Certainly, we didn’t put them there so we can all bend over, or bow down, or fall over ourselves in worship over their every move, word, action or picture or video!

So, get a grip, WP supporters! You’re becoming an embarassment!

Many have been brought up indoctrinated with the virtue of prostration and submission to higher authority. This is not surprising.

I’d say any kind of worship is bad, extreme or no.

the PAP is managing the country so badly and we seriously need alternatives and more voices who dares to speak up for the citizens.

Love + Adulation does not mean supporters are blind to the potential of failure of these leaders if and when it does happen. Perhaps you judge too harshly? I personally don’t see a problem with words of encouragement and support – it does not mean people are blind to all forms of reason. But perhaps for someone that seems to me overly critical and bereft of all form of human emotion, you wouldn’t understand – after all you only worship yourself.

Even though I support the WP and their policies, I would have to agree on this one. While I think it’s great that Singaporeans are becoming more liberal and expressing their thoughts and enthusiasm openly, some of the fan worship is getting overboard. I recall myself cringing at the unabashed “Chen Show Mao!” fangirl screams at Hougang Stadium. While I won’t deny that I too, have certain *ahem* favourites amongst the WP politicians; IMHO, it wasn’t polite to scream the name of only one candidate when Mr. Chen Show Mao was contesting together with 5 other candidates as a team.

    • Azhar
      May 21, 2011 at 10:06

Then how about rooting for only George when it is a team of 5? In George we trust but not the rest? That was even more rude.

I recall myself cringing at the unabashed “Chen Show Mao!” fangirl screams at Hougang Stadium.

haha… I might cringe too. Then again, it’s simply the way people are different. I like some music and admire some of the artists that make them, but you will NEVER catch me screaming their name. Yet these people exist.

Simply put, the ability to ‘love’ (to extreme extents) is different for everyone. I don’t think it justifies as embarrassment though.

I don’t know if you are deprived or something, but i wouldn’t call those post unrestrained outpouring of love, maybe you feel it that way because your a hermit? WHat i see are words of encouragement to egg them onwards and to do the people who chose them proud.

I see both sides of the story, there are the crazy PAP supporters, so why not some WP or NSP crazy supporters. What is important is us the middle sitting on the fence judging each and every events and policies neither blind nor devoted blindly to either sides. But i guess most people are frustrated with the MIW taking about fairness, equality, meritrocracy, and what have you in the highest order, but only to find that its just empty rhetoric …. that people starts to doubt whatever sincereity the MIW is offering. But who can blame them, MIW has started attracting little LKYs wannabes, all of them holding a condescending behaviour even those from lowly clerks in community centres and People’s association.

I think you are being too cynical and rude by calling these people an embarrassment. For the record, I’m not pro any political parties. Maybe you should think twice next time you decide to publish posts of such nature, because it exposes more flaws in you than in those WP supporters.

  13. May 21, 2011 at 10:06

The post has its merits. I myself for example, don’t know what Chen Show Mao himself stands for. Although I think the responses here show that name-calling and insults never go down well with anyone. The point here can be made without labelling any group of individuals. Just my opinion.

  14. Julyan
    May 21, 2011 at 10:06

I totally agree with you. I find it rather sad that citizens seem to be supporting a party as a whole and hating another as a whole.

When we should be closely scrutinizing individual MPs and their work regardless of which party they belong to.

Least good ministers become hapless victims of blind adoration and blind hatred between parties.

  15. Sangeeta Narayan
    May 21, 2011 at 10:06

I agree with the writer’s observations. Chen Show Mao fits the stereotypical Chinese image of the highly educated man. He looks like – though we don’t know for sure because he has not been tested – someone who might be an efficient administrator and if true, could be a cabinet minister. On that count alone, he deserves to be in parliament. But he has not said anything that is highly impressive or earth shattering. He doesn’t capture the imagination like Vincent Wijeysinghe can.

But I also wonder if this reaction that the writer describes WP supporters as having 1) is actually an strong expression of frustration at the PAP; and, 2) the political culture – that of the worship of one man – that the PAP itself has engendered in Singaporeans.

There has to be passion when a change has to be effected. for the writer’s comparison to the “Reds”, I strongly disagrees as he honestly do not know what was the fever pitch that the so call “Mao” movement created. That is fanaticism and it all happened because the leaders start stirring the pot. Here, it is not the WP that is stiring things up, they cannot, so for now i am indeed happy to see the passion in the supporters to effect this change in government. Without this passion, with only the skeptical, standing in the middle type stance like the writer, or as he says let’s wait and see (this being the typical comfy Singaporean attitude) what the WP can do, there will be the change we see till now. let’s jsut keep this passion…..

Let’s get things in perspective. Yes, the opposition team has yet to debate in parliament but we have already seen many changes in the making just from the feedback which the PAP govt received during the 9-days campaigning.

The opposition, not just Workers Party, raised issues on foreign talents, housing prices, transport, ministerial salary, accountability & responsibilty – and what have we seen? In fact, halfway through the campaigning, we saw PM Lee apologising (never happened before by a PAP govt). Post Polling Day, we saw a humbler PAP members – in fact, every PAP who won a parliamentary seat seems to be “humbled” by the opportunity to serve us!

We also saw the exit of many bigwigs – MM Lee, SM Goh, WKS, MBT and Raymond Lim – the last 3 ministers getting the brunt of the frustration of many sporean resulting from the escape of Mas Selamat, housing prices (even at the final moment, MBT insist that housing prices are affordable!) and transport issues (no sound from this minister but try taking the mrt or driving in spore “highways”)..
Today, PM Lee even announced that they are looking at reviewing at ministerial salary and towards making a Sporean first policy (which was proposed by SDP.)

So, to your comments – Yes, the WP MPs have yet to debate in parliament but can you imagine what they can do to the good of Spore during their 5-yr term, when at 9 days of campaigning, they are able to make the PAP govt sit up straight and not take sporeans for granted.

PAP also not short of die-hard fans mah. Is it really necessary to call names? Haha You should look at George Yeo’s FB. There are people that would religiously visit the page and pour out the admiration, love and would resist slightest negative comments on PAP, Aljunied GRC or George Yeo policies. There are also people that would blndlessly follow LKY’s doctrine and think that he is god sent comrade single-handedly built up this country without giving credits to others.

I suggest the writer should check on PAP before criticising WP’s supporters. PAP for so long has alienated, criticised, neglected and condescended its own citizens. There is nothing wrong to show love for Chen Show Mao. It is a new found connection that people have to an authority that has been disconnected for so long.

What’s wrong with addressing each other “comrades”? In case you don’t know, other than those who members of a communist party, it could mean something else: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/comrade

Those messages on the WP’s fb are nothing more than encouragement notes. If people are shouting for CSM, so be it. He is a celebrity in his own right, even the great LKY said so. BTW, he has become an inspirational figure for some young people, if you look at his beginnings in Singapore. Unlike the present day PRC immigrants.

    May 22, 2011 at 10:06

Is it an embarrassment ? I beg to differ . In early years when PAP first came to power in the late 50’s & early 60’s, the same groundswell of euphoria was bestow on LKY & his gang. Do you folks remember? Likewise, after almost 5 decades of absolute PAP rule that has degenerated into a “heartless” ruling party, a creditable opposition finally emerges. Granted they have not spoke in Parliament yet. Neither had PAP when we celebrated with them before they commenced its rule in 1959, albeit self governing in nature.
Let’s await judgement of newly elected WP MPs till Parliament sits. Meantime, let us rejoice their entry into the august chamber… No regrets nor repentance is needed !

This GE has spawn a new generation of unquestioning fanaticism, many of whom fixated on the candidates, and not on the substance or the issues.

The knee-jerk responses to this blog post only serve to reinforce the writers’s point – the adulation of the Workers’ Party is veering dangerously close to the fanatical and the emotional, like Justin Bieber’s fans on a rampage against critics.

This is not an encouraging sign to aspirations a First World Parliament. I don’t think Low Thia Khiang would approve of blind loyalty. Don’t get me wrong. Passion is good, but let’s stay focus on the issues. The election fever will subside. There’s five years to monitor and judge the work and performance of the MPs.

Come on! The blogger is just trying to be objective and he is neither anti PAP or opposition.

Why must oppo supporters behave like kids sometimes? Get all defensive when someone write something good about PAP and not-so-good about opposition?

Don’t be blinded by the heavy-opposition-loving on the internet.

I am glad for this blog which gives an unbias view of politics in Singapore, unlike TR which has sunken to a desperado level unfortunately. TR behaves as if someone from PAP has killed TR founders’ parents.

    • Sangeeta Narayan
      May 22, 2011 at 10:06

Yes, I think the writer was balanced. He or she did mention and decry the same hero worship for the PAP. I think it`s true that many opposition supporters cannot be objective. But they are not wrong in how they FEEL. Now, just try and connect your feelings with your intellect, opposition supporters, and you will not fail.

    May 22, 2011 at 10:06

If you look at the way Government has act before and after election, you see a big different. Though all is just talks, but there’s different. So what’s is wrong with worshiping the only 6 who will say no to certain policy while the rest just nod their head as if they are been force to?

Take the Casino policy, if there’s more member against the idea, do you think the casino will be built? They are definitely be our hero even if they hasn’t spoken because they will stand up for us!

Take WSK incident, Mr Low suggested WSK to step down but our PM on the other hand defended WSK. In Big corporation, if you did something bad, you will be force to step down. you might say that government is not a big corporation but you also have to admit their salaries represent big corporation salaries, so in otherword, they should act like one if they want take those big fat salary!

Take Vivian Balakrisna. If you overspend in a big corporation by 3 times, do you think you will still be standing here?

So my take is simple, this 6 are different. They don’t nod their head just because they are scare. It’s because they are from a different party! a different view. So i hope you respect the Aljunied citizen decision! and God bless

    May 22, 2011 at 10:06

Agree with much of the article but I think you’re wrong on 2 counts. 1) You equate the gushing facebook posts with blind loyalty or extreme worship. Evidence? If a WP MP misappropriated party funds or did something seriously wrong and still received the same support, that would be blind loyalty. At this moment, it’s over the top yes, but your language is equally so. 2) You underestimate the role passion plays in fighting for change.

  37. MZ
    May 22, 2011 at 10:06

Many people voted for the first time even when they are well into their 40’s. Let them bask a bit longer in the euphoria of their newfound freedom. Without the selfless individuals who stood up in the opposition camp, the opportunity to be heard would have never been possible.

True, the WP had not yet uttered a single word in parliament, yet. But their very presence has caused the ruling party to effect “epochal” changes in the cabinet lineup, and the CSM effect had been one of the many causes for the PAP to re-look at ministerial pay, already says a lot. Expectation and the pressure on the WP to perform has also just mounted to a new high. It would be an onerous task going forward.

So, for now, let their supporters write them the encouraging posts which they so deserve.

Same goes for the PAP MPs. Some of whom have started to take random checks on public transport, instead of staying in their airconditioned ivory towers. This can only be a good sign. I would after this, go and post some encouraging words on their fb too.

  41. May 22, 2011 at 10:06

Certainly Dr Chen Show Mao has not done anything to hype up himself. Quite to the contrary, Dr Chen appears to downplay himself.

Watch the YouTube videos – Nomination Day, Victory Day, etc. It would appear that Dr Chen took care to stand much further down the line, or at the back, preferring to nudge the Minority MPs to the fore, standing studiously behind Low TK or S Lim or the others.

It was also interesting to note from a YouTube video that showed the PAP team driving around after GE and the WP team happened to be at a void deck, most WP members waved back to the PAP team and the YouTube video had a wisecrack comment about waving PAP goodbye – but not Dr Chen who just continued to look at whatever is on the void deck table.

Time will tell. Time always tell. So let’s have more light than heat.

  42. May 22, 2011 at 10:06

Compare PAP’s Lim Biow Chan puke on his Facebook page, claiming that he has been doing informal audits on SBS bus services in his electoral ward previously on the quiet and decided only to publicise it now.

If SBS improves those bus services post-GE2011 based on PAP’s Lim Biow Chan’s recent complaints, what does that tell you of Lim Biow Chan’s claim of the past five years or more, eh?

This post is far from being perfect. But as a political bystander, I don’t see how this “supports” PAP all because it points out flawed human characteristics of opposition supporters. I don’t even recall him commenting about WP or PAP’s political competency (or lack of it).

To flamers. Get your insults right. He is insulting you (not Your beloved parties).
The most accurate part of this article is the responses that the flamers created themselves.
You weren’t defending ‘opposition’ or ‘democracy’, you are really just defending yourselves.

I don’t find you guys an ’embarrassment’ because I am not a Singaporean. It is, however, amusing to watch your logics self-combust at the slightest provocation.

To those who believe in the policies that Non-PAP parties want to implement: Good for you & good for Singapore. Action & Counter-action is required for any form of sustainable development. If everyone was like you, Singapore will continue to mature politically and culturally.

To those who believe in opposition for the sake of opposition: You were the circus that I attended rallies to watch.

A 12-year old boy who’s not a resident of his ward, visited his inaugural MPS to get CSM’s signature and a photo taken with his idol. The boy was on the verge of tears as he spoke in front of the camera, professing that he was just an ordinary boy, but after listening to CSM at the rallies, he’s inspired to study hard and emulate his idol. Frankly, I’m both amused and amazed. Amused at the adulation displayed, yet by a simple boy who found a role model. I’m amazed by this transcendance in inspiring the masses found in CSM. I mean, if your child aspires to be someone great because of someone whom you know too well to be imperfect and weak, won’t you be amazed too?

Still, I must say that there should be more civility in our online discussion. I feel bad that this blogger was senselessly attacked and accused of being a PAP supporter when his previous posts suggest otherwise. Sometimes we do let our emotions get the better of us. I hope we can look back at this post one year on and laugh at our own brash words. ‘onesingaporean’, forgive us for our recklessness and insensitivity.

If not for these men and a woman, the PAP would continue to cruise along with the status quo. They are the reason for the change in the PAP and perhaps for the style of Govt.
And if its better for the people as a whole, then they deserve the adulation they
    get.
Or maybe the writer thinks he can do better?
